RACHEL DEIN
Botanical Bas Relief
ABOUT
Rachel Dein is a British artist renowned for her delicate plaster casts of plants and flowers — intimate records of the natural world preserved in exquisite detail. Since she began casting in 2011, originally under the name Tactile Studio, Rachel has developed a distinctive practice she calls botanical bas-relief, now admired and emulated by artists and students worldwide.
Working from her studio in London, Rachel’s process is rooted in careful observation and quiet reverence for nature’s transience. Each piece begins with freshly gathered stems and leaves pressed into wet clay, leaving behind intricate impressions that capture every vein, petal, and contour. Liquid plaster is poured into these fleeting moulds, creating a permanent imprint of what is otherwise ephemeral.
From a single bloom immortalised in a tile to large-scale panels evoking wild meadows, her works are both poetic and archaeological — fossil-like memories of living things. Through her botanical castings, Rachel invites viewers to pause and notice the subtle, passing beauty of the natural world, held forever in time.
