Marble Spit

Working at the intersection of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design, Hannah McDermid explores the expressive possibilities of wood through modern marquetry.

Inspired by the quiet simplicity of the natural world, Hannah creates intricate compositions using carefully selected wood veneers, each cut entirely by hand. Grain, tone and direction become integral to the work, introducing movement, rhythm and depth through the material's inherent characteristics.

Beginning with a drawing, each composition is translated into individual pieces of veneer before being assembled, pressed, sanded and finished with linseed oil. A meticulous process that balances precision with an intuitive understanding of material.

No two works are identical. Each is a considered study of form, texture and the natural individuality of wood — bringing a centuries-old technique into a distinctly contemporary context.
