JULIA REBAUDO
Textiles
ABOUT
Julia Rebaudo is a textile artist and weaver whose practice begins not at the loom, but in the field. Working according to a principle of truth to materials, she weaves predominantly with raw, unspun wool, much of it harvested directly from her own flock of rare-breed and cross-breed sheep.
Rejecting the conventional journey from fleece to spun yarn, Julia has developed her own non-twist weaving technique, working directly with the natural structure of wool. Using a countermarch floor loom, she builds rugs and wall hangings that retain the extraordinary variation found within each fleece: softness and coarseness, long and short fibres, subtle shifts in colour and the individual characteristics of each animal.
Julia increasingly blade-shears her flock by hand, allowing an intimate understanding of where each section of wool originates and minimising waste. Almost every usable part of the fleece enters her work, with remnants used for stuffing or composted.
Her slow, highly direct practice celebrates wool as an agricultural material: grown over time, shaped by animal, breed, landscape and season, and valuable precisely as it is.
